Day 1 - Seoul

After showering and taking lunch, we're ready to explore Seoul. Our first destination was Gyeongbokgung Palace (www.royalpalace.go.kr). This is one of iconic place in Seoul. Most tourist insert this place in their itinerary. Under the summer heat and many local people (it's summer holiday !!), Gyeongbokgung Palace was quite crowded that time. The entrance fee was 3000 KRW/person. Fortunately, we arrived when the changing of the Royal Guards ceremony was held. In my opinion, it wasn't very special, but the most interesting thing is how Korea has organized their tourism successfully. All spots in the tourist area are packaged nicely, beautifully and culturally.

Gyeongbokgung Palace area is very huge and full of historical sites. I did't even remember the names ( you can read in their website ).  My favorite spot is the Pond in the middle of the palace. I was imagining if we visit Korea in autumn, maybe the scenery will be more beautiful, because in summer it looked like Kebun Raya Bogor in the cleaner version :P

Finished with all cultural things in Gyeongbukgung, we left that palace and found out that Korea's government was very successful in conserving their cultural heritage. We're amazed that in the middle of busy and modern Seoul, there are still many preserved cultural sites.
Across the Gyeongbokgung Palace, there's Gwanghwamun Square, a public area which Jakarta's residents desire to have. Near the King Sejong's statue, there was an orchestra performed which members are oldies, and we could watch them for free. Just a  minute walking, we found some kids were so happy playing in the water fountain.

We found Deoksugung Palace and Seoul Plaza on the way to Myeongdong and Nanta Theatre. Thanks to Mr Lee from Residence EO, we got discount 20% for Nanta's ticket just by showing the name card. The receptionist said because Residence EO is categorized as a hostel ( you won't get discount if you stay at hotel :P ). We bought the cheapest ticket ( 32.000 KRW/person after discount ) for the seats at the balcony. For overall, Nanta's Show is unique and interesting, but you have to buy the VIP ticket if you want to get awake through the show, because there were many interactions between the players and the VIP audiences. Yeah...what money can't buy :)

On the way to hotel, we passed the Myeongdong area, which is a very Hip area in Seoul. Shops, restaurants, boutiques, cafes, entertainment center are lined up. We didn't want to visit any shop on the first day in Korea, so we're looking for food. We prefer to tasting the Korea street snack to restaurant. And guess what....Korean street snacks were delicious...We tried the sausage, fish meat like otak-otak, tteokboki and finished with Banana Milk..yummy....

Exploring Korea

For this trip, I didn't do many research. I've read some travel book about Korea, especially Claudia Kaunang's book. Her description and itinerary is simple and suitable for us. With additional Mr Google's and Trip Advisor's help, I made our itinerary for 10 days trip in Korea :
  • Day 1 : Seoul ( Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwanghwamun Square, Deoksugung Palace, Myeongdong, Cooking Nanta Show )
  • Day 2 : Nami Island, Insadong, Cheonggycheon Stream, N-Seoul Tower
  • Day 3 : Jeonju (Hanok Village, Pungnamun Gate, Jeongdong Cathedral) - Seoul (Banpo Bridge)
  • Day 4 : Busan ( Taejongdae, Lotte Mall, Jagalchi Market, BIFF Square, Yongdusan Park & Busan Tower )
  • Day 5 : Busan ( Yonggungsa Temple, Haeundae Beach, APEC Nurimaru House, Busan Cinema Center, Shinsegae Centum City, Gwangan Bridge )
  • Day 6 : Busan - Gyeongju ( Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, Gyeongju National Museum, Daereungwon Royal Tombs, Wolseong Fortress, Cheomseongdae Observatory, Anapji Pond )
  • Day 7 : Gyeongju - Pohang - Sokcho (Rodeo Street, Jungang Market, Abai Village )
  • Day 8 : Sokcho ( Mount Seoraksan ) - Seoul ( Itaewon )
  • Day 9 : Everland :)
  • Day 10 : Seoul ( Myeongdong Cathedral, COEX Mall, Dongdaemun Market )
South Korea isn't a big country, so we can make a round trip tour exploring the southeast region in 10 days. We skipped Jeju Island in this itinerary, regarding of additional flight cost, and some information that says Bali is more beautiful than Jeju :)

Beautiful and modern Korea

Thursday, 26 July 2012

Finally, after 6 hours in the AirAsia X, we're arrived at Incheon International Airport. Incheon is about 1 hour drive from Seoul. I've read that Incheon was one of the busiest and largest airport in the world. For 7 years (2005-2012) it has been awarded as the best airport in the world by Airport Council International. No wonder..this airport is very very huge, modern and clean. We had to use a shuttle train, just for terminal transfer. Luxurious boutique and shops were full of customers ( most tourist do shopping in Korea, even in the airport :)). We didn't have much time to explore this airport because we wanted to check in, take a shower and brush the teeth as soon as possible :). Then, we went to the information center, and bought 2 Airport Limousine Bus tickets. We took bus no 6015 to stop at Myeongdong area. The bus fare is 10.000 KRW/person (IDR 80.000). The driver was so gentle, kind of most Korean people. We stopped in front of King Sejong Hotel, and easily found our hotel because of the map that I've printed from the website. Our hotel is very very recommended !! The room is very clean, has modern design and facility beyond our expectation, such as flat TV, refrigerator, microwave, kitchen sink, hot n cold shower, free wifi and toast with jam, cereal, milk, coffee and teain the morning. The owner, Mr JK Lee is very kind, helpful and speaks English very well, and also the staff (exclude the housekeeping, she spoke only Korean). The best part of our hotel is the Location. We could reach the hip Myeongdong area just by walking 5 minutes, with Myeongdong subway station under it. You don't have to worry about about food, because many restaurant and minimart could be reached by only several steps :). We decided to stay here for 6 nights (all the nights we had in Seoul). We payed 65.000 KRW/room/nights. It was a great value of money... Visit www.residenceeo.com. Very very recommended :)

After showering, we went near the hotel for hunting lunch. We found a small restaurant which style -As seen in TV Korean drama's -. The owner can't speak English, so we just pointed a picture with title "Basin Frozen Pollack Soup". We ordered it, and surprisingly, it was very delicious in a very big portion !! Even we're very starving that time, we couldn't finish it....we pay 16.000 KRW for that soup plus 2 rice. The food was worth it since the portion was big enough for 4 persons. And this will make you love Korea more....all restaurant give free flow mineral water (I think it came from filter machine, but it was very okay, and they always gave the cold one in the summer :))
